Watering Hostas: The Ultimate Guide and Best Way to Water Hostas

Updated: Feb 11

Adequate and consistent watering is fundamental to the well-being of hostas, ensuring they maintain optimal health and vibrant foliage. Consider the following best practices to water for thriving gardens.

Hostas in Dry Shade

Hostas prefer consistent moisture, so it's essential to keep the soil nice and damp but not waterlogged. Once established, shade-loving hostas can survive in dry conditions. You may have heard hostas are good for dry shade. They’ll tolerate dry shade, but for optimal health and the most beautiful lush growth, they need regular water. Think about those times you’ve been thirsty without water at hand. Maybe you’re at the beach or on a hike and your water bottle runs dry. You know you can’t do your best, thrive even, without water.

Hostas are much the same. They need adequate water to thrive like you and me.

Provide Adequate Water

Ensure they receive adequate water, weekly or more frequently when you plant them to give them a great start in your hosta garden.

Once established, regular watering continues to help your hostas thrive, especially during dry spells. We recommend watering deeply and less frequently to encourage the development of a robust root system that reaches deep down to make the water provided by Mother Nature more consistent.

At Hosta Heaven, we provide an inch of water each week in our hosta gardens throughout the season. When it’s particularly dry, we add an extra inch mid week to help our hostas thrive. We don’t use automatic sprinkling. Instead, we drag out the hose on Sundays, unless it’s currently raining. We water in the biggest garden for 90 minutes before moving to the smaller gardens for 60 minutes each.

How do we know it’s an inch of water? We measured. Move your rain guage to where you’re watering or put a cylinder shaped container (a straight sided bucket works) out in your garden. Turn on the water and check periodically until an inch of water has collected in your container. That’s how much time you need to water.

We use Rainbird sprinklers staked into the garden and we leave them there so each is set for the space it covers. It takes a few more sprinklers, but we don’t have to figure out where to stake them, how much pressure they need or where to set the limits of their movement every time we water. We set the sprinklers once, connect the hose, water and repeat.

Pro Tips: Best Way to Water Hostas

As you know, hostas thrive in shade. This protects them from the scorching afternoon sun and helps the soil retain moisture. Making sure you provide adequate water, especially during dry spells, is crucial for ensuring they thrive and showcase their full beauty.

Morning Watering

Aim to water hostas in the morning to make sure your hostas are well hydrated and ready to face the heat of the day.

Water Only When Needed

While hostas appreciate consistent moisture, it's crucial to avoid waterlogged soil, which can lead to root rot. Ensure that the soil drains to prevent excess water from pooling around the roots.

Be Careful with Hostas in Containers

When planting hostas in containers, make sure you water regularly. Hostas in pots will dry out more quickly than hostas planted in the landscape. At Hosta Heaven, we water potted hostas daily and I check my own personal container planted hostas daily and water when needed.

Adjust Watering Based on Season

Hostas have varying water requirements depending on the season. During hot summer months, pay extra attention to soil moisture, as increased temperatures can lead to quicker evaporation. Most of all, reduce watering in the fall. At Hosta Heaven, we stop watering our gardens after Labor Day, allowing our hostas to begin moving into dormancy. Their leaves will begin to yellow and fade as they prepare for winter.

By incorporating these watering best practices into your hosta care routine, you'll contribute to the overall health and vitality of your plants. Consistent and thoughtful watering helps hostas thrive, allowing them to display their lush foliage to its full potential.
